The Donald Knuth & Charles Bigelow Type Design Incubator (KBI) is made possible through a partnership between SILICON, Words of Type, and Letterform Archive. We are grateful to Adobe, Glyphs, and Font Proofer for supplying students with free licenses to course software; and to the advisory support of the University of Reading and ANRT. We are grateful also to Donald Knuth and Charles Bigelow for their inspiration and support.
The 2025 program began on June 23rd, 2025. Each week, we held two sessions via Zoom, 3 or 4 hours per session (i.e., there were 10 sessions in all). The program ended on July 24th, 2025.
KBI 2025 welcomed designers working in three cohorts: Arabic and Arabic-Derived Scripts, Decolonizing Latin, and Southeast Asian Scripts. Each student received 100% free tuition.
KBI is made possible through a generous private gift from an Anonymous Donor.
